Templates usually make you start over
The normal template workflow is backwards: you download a beautiful file, then spend twenty minutes copying your own data into its columns, and discover halfway through that your data has three columns the template does not. The formatting was never the hard part — the fitting was.
This works the other way round. Your file keeps its own columns, and the theme adapts to it: header fills, banding, totals, accent colours and number formats are applied to whatever structure you brought.
The five themes
Minimal is quiet greys and one thin rule — the right pick when the numbers should do the talking. Executive is a navy header band with generous spacing, the closest thing here to a board-deck look. Financial follows accounting conventions: green accents, red negatives and tight rules. Playful is a warm violet for sheets that are not going to a bank. Dark is a slate canvas with a cyan accent that still prints legibly.
Minimal and Executive are free. The other three come with Pro, and you can preview any of them on your own data before deciding.
Themes are only half the job
A theme on badly structured data still reads badly. The design rules that matter most — alignment, decimal consistency, restraint with colour — are covered in the seven rules post, and every one of them is applied automatically before the theme goes on top.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I use my own brand colours?
- Not yet. Five fixed themes today; saved brand themes with your own colours are on the list. Ask in the chat and you can at least switch themes and rename headers in plain English.
- Which theme prints best?
- Minimal and Executive. All five are built to print, and the exported file is set to fit to one page wide, but light backgrounds use far less toner.
- Do themes work on any spreadsheet?
- Yes — a theme is applied to whatever columns you brought, rather than expecting a fixed layout. The output adapts to your structure.
- Are free themes limited in any way?
- No. Minimal and Executive are the complete themes, not previews. The free tier adds one small credit line at the bottom of the exported sheet.
